Arkansas holds all-out lead at SEC Indoor Championships
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Feb. 28, 2020)-----The Arkansas men's and Arkansas women's teams lead the 2020 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships following the first day of competition Friday at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
The Arkansas men currently lead the team standings with 35 points, while Tennessee is second with 32. Ole Miss and Missouri are tied for third with 20 points, followed by Alabama (18), Kentucky (17), Texas A&M (16), Florida (12), LSU (12), Georgia (8), South Carolina (4) and Mississippi State (1).
Arkansas leads the women's team standings with 36 points, while Texas A&M is second with 28 and Georgia is third with 27. Tennessee is fourth with 21 points, followed by Alabama (19), Kentucky (13), Ole Miss (12), Missouri (10), Florida (9), Auburn (6), LSU (6), Mississippi State (5) and Vanderbilt (3).
Individual champions crowned
Individual champions crowned Friday include Tennessee's Latavia Maines in the women's shot put (16.84m/55-3), Tennessee's Carey McLeod in the men's long jump (8.19m/26-10.5), Kentucky's Matthew Peare in the men's pole vault (5.46m/17-11), Tennessee's Joseph Maxwell in the men's shot put (19.83m/65-0.75), Arkansas' Emmanuel Cheboson in the men's 5000m (13:52.72), Arkansas' Katie Izzo in the women' 5000m (15:48.34) and Texas A&M's Deborah Acquah in the women's long jump (6.45m/21-2).
Texas A&M's Tyra Gittens won the women's pentathlon with a school record 4,391 points, which is also the top mark in the NCAA this season. Georgia's Anna Hall was second with 4,166 points, while Arkansas' G'Auna Edwards was third with 4,047.
Ole Miss won the men's distance medley relay in 9:40.95, while Arkansas won the women's distance medley relay in 11:19.51.
Izzo breaks 30-year old meet record
Arkansas' Katie Izzo won the women's 5000m with a meet record 15:48.34. She broke a record that was set in 1990 by Kentucky's Valerie McGovern (15:53.34).
Men's heptathlon
Georgia freshman Kyle Garland leads the heptathlon with 3,314 points on the first day. Arkansas' Markus Ballengee is second with 3,096, and Tennessee's Yariel Soto stands third (2,993).
Saturday's schedule, SECN+ coverage
The SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships conclude Saturday with action set to begin at 10 a.m. CT in the men's heptathlon.
